NFL Staff Rumors: Shanahan, Giants, Revis

When the 49ers opened training camp, they did so without Kyle Shanahan performing his usual full duties as head coach. The 46-year-old skipper had been involved in a car accident, suffering a concussion, broken ribs, a broken nose, and a broken hand. 40 stitches and nearly two months later, Shanahan is “basically all the way back to full duties” heading into the season opener, according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.

The evidence to suggest Shanahan was nearing a full recovery came in a late-August practice when Wagoner was spotted calling plays during full-team periods using the offense’s walkie talkie. Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak had been responsible for play-calling duties throughout Shanahan’s recovery, so the head coach reclaiming the walkie talkie was a strong sign of progress. At that point in time, Shanahan had already told the media he intended to coach the team’s season opener, but his continued progress shows that a Week 1 return is well within reach.

Here are a couple other staff rumors from around the NFL:

• According to Ryan Dunleavy of New York Post Sports, the Giants saw two recent changes to their front office staff. Per Dunleavy, Dennis Hickey has been named senior personnel executive after serving the previous four seasons as assistant director of player personnel. The role reportedly is “more out of the facility on a day-to-day basis.” Another New York staffer, Usama Young, is reportedly no longer with the organization. A former NFL safety who spent time on the Saints, Browns, and Raiders, Young took a job with the NFL working with player engagement three years after his playing career came to an end. He was hired by the Giants in the 2025 offseason to the role of vice president of player engagement, but his time with the team has come to an end.
• Lastly, we’re a long way from a hire, but former All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis is reportedly interested in breaking into the coaching world, according to Tim Graham of The Athletic. The Hall of Fame defender’s son is currently playing football at Mercyhurst University, and being so close to the sport again “is pulling at” Revis, who has seen a former teammate of his ascending the coaching ranks. For three years in New York, Revis manned the Jets secondary with safety Jim Leonhard at his back. After concluding his playing career, Leonhard went back to his alma mater, Wisconsin, to serve as defensive backs coach. After a year, he was elevated to defensive coordinator, and he even eventually served part of a season as interim head coach for the Badgers, in place of a fired Paul Chryst. Leonhard quickly made the jump to the NFL as the Broncos defensive backs coach/pass game coordinator in 2024, adding assistant head coach to his title the next year. This offseason he was hired as the Bills defensive coordinator, joining him with secondary coach Joe Danna, who was Revis’ defensive backs coach for two years on the Jets about 10 years ago. If Revis is serious about entering the coaching ranks, Buffalo may be the perfect place for him to start.
