NFL super-agent shares behind-the-scenes details of Darren Waller’s return and how Dolphins trade came together
USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins' outlook at tight end for 2025 underwent a roller coaster ride at the beginning of last week. We still don't know whether the position is going to end up as an improvement or a downgrade — but it was certainly a thrilling 48 hours to watch everything unfold.

Miami first traded tight end Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh as a part of a blockbuster deal. Then, 24 hours later, it was reported that the team had traded to acquire the rights to tight end Darren Waller. Waller, who was retired in 2024, most recently played with the Giants in 2023. The subsequent moves seemed to indicate that there was some coordinated effort to sync transactions — ensuring that no move was made regarding Smith until a subsequent replacement was identified.

Now, thanks to NFL super-agent Drew Rosenhaus, we know exactly how the dynamics of Waller's upcoming NFL return materialized. Rosenhaus, in his weekly appearance on Josh Moser's 'Sports Xtra', revealed how the ball got rolling.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus reveals details of Darren Waller's NFL return & trade

"It was amazing. I got a phone call last Friday, the last week of June, from Darren (Waller). He said — "Drew, I've decided that I want to play again. I miss football. I've got the itch to play, the love of the game is back, and I would like to play for the Miami Dolphins."

And to Joe Schoen's credit and Chris Grier's credit, those two got together and quickly worked out a deal compensation wise. And for the Dolphins, this was terrific timing after losing Jonnu Smith. To add Darren Waller to the mix was really very fortunate. Those are big shoes to fill with Jonnu being part of that trade to the Steelers."

Rosenhaus has been a central figure for the Miami Dolphins this offseason. He represents star wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who needed to be talked off the ledge after a frustrating season in 2024. He represents defensive tackle Zach Sieler, who may or may not be seeking a new contract after two double-digit sack seasons. He represents former Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith and, of course, represents Miami's new tight end in Waller.

One wouldn't expect anything different than for Rosenhaus to be optimistic about Waller's return and the fortunate break that he believes it is for Miami. Time will tell. Waller has spoken in the past about not having it in him to fully commit to the process anymore. Many Dolphins fans are spurned by a former star coming to serve an ancillary role in Miami after watching Odell Beckham Jr. turn in nothing short of a disastrous 2024 campaign. He was cut midway through the season.

Perhaps Waller really is back to his old form after a year away to heal his body. If he is, it will indeed be a fortunate turn of events for the Dolphins. If he's not, it will be a frustrating pivot that did not materialize. The only thing that can truly provide clarity on this front is seeing Waller in action on the field. Miami won't have to wait long — the team reports to training camp in just over two weeks.
