The NFL weekend delivered plenty of drama in Week 17. A surprising Pittsburgh Steelers loss to the Cleveland Browns opened the AFC North race and set up a winner-take-all finale against the Ravens in Week 18, while the Philadelphia Eagles edged the Buffalo Bills 13-12 in a defensive battle that came down to a late two-point attempt.
The action concluded with “Sunday Night Football” showcasing a high-scoring battle between the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears. San Francisco prevailed 42-38 in a shootout at Levi’s Stadium, led by Brock Purdy’s 303 passing yards and five total touchdowns, while Bears quarterback Caleb Williams threw for 330 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort.
The win positioned the 49ers for a winner-take-all Week 18 finale against the Seattle Seahawks, with the NFC West title, the conference’s No. 1 seed, and a first-round bye all on the line.
Following Sunday’s slate, the NFL officially released its Week 18 schedule, which immediately drew scrutiny. The league announced a Saturday doubleheader featuring the Carolina Panthers vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 4:30 p.m. ET and Seahawks-49ers at 8:00 p.m. ET, followed by a full Sunday schedule that would culminate with Ravens-Steelers on SNF.
That decision sparked swift backlash from fans, many of whom believed Seahawks-49ers, a division rivalry with top-seed implications, was the most compelling game on the board. Social media reactions poured in, criticizing the league for passing over a matchup that would determine the NFC West champion and potentially the conference’s top seed.

“THE SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL GAME LMOOOOO ,” one fan wrote.
“How’d yall [expletive] up the most obvious Sunday Night Football decision ever?” another fan questioned.
“Ok seriously how are the Niners/Seahawks not on Sunday night football?? 8-8 vs 9-7 gets Sunday night football instead of the battle for the 1seed. Whack,” said one fan.
“We all predicted this would happen between the Steelers and Ravens you’re not slick nfl,” another fan posted.
“Hawks 49ers not being the Sunday night game is criminal,” a fan noted.
“The NFL really watched this 49ers game and they decided to have Ravens-Steelers be the last game of the regular season instead of Seahawks-49ers LMAO,” another fan remarked.
By contrast, the league chose to place Steelers-Ravens in the Sunday Night Football slot, a game with its own significance as an AFC North title decider. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson could return from a back injury that sidelined him in Week 17 and one of the league’s greatest quarterbacks, Aaron Rodgers, could play his final NFL game on Sunday, should Pittsburgh lose.
