All of the biggest offseason questions for the Philadelphia Eagles have been surrounding the young defense that will be on the field in 2025. Nothing about the offense...until now.
Sports Illustrated writer Matt Verderame wrote a preview of the 2025 Philadelphia Eagles with different categories in there. One of those sections had the team's biggest question entering training camp. It was an interesting one that hasn't been brought up as often, but he asked, "Is there enough in the passing game?"
"Before last season, Barkley had played 16 games only once since 2018. While he was tremendous in ’24 by rushing for 2,005 yards, the concern should be whether the Eagles have enough offensive firepower should he miss time.
While Brown and Smith are excellent, there’s minimal depth behind them and tight end Dallas Goedert has been steadily declining over the past four seasons. For all of its strengths, Philadelphia didn’t have a 3,000-yard passer last season, as Hurts had the luxury of handing off and watching Barkley run. (Hurts also missed two games.) Even a slight injury could cause issues."
One obvious choice to the team is that Brown and Smith are going to be the top targets on the team as they have been the top two on the team over the last three years. Typically, Goedert is second on the team, but his injuries in the previous three years have hindered the passing game a bit.
Philadelphia believed the third pass target problems were solved last year with the acquisition of Jahan Dotson before the season started. Dotson didn't even catch 20 passes in the regular season and didn't score his first touchdown until the postseason.
The question asked by Verderame is a legitimate one. Outside of Brown and Smith, the Eagles have Dotson, Terrace Marshall Jr., Johnny Wilson, Ainias Smith, and offseason workout standout Danny Gray looking to earn that WR3 spot.
Dotson is likely to win the job, but it is not a guarantee, unlike last year. His production was poor, but Wilson and Ainias Smith did not have as much output between the two in 2024 as well. Wilson and Smith were rookies, so they get a pass.
Somebody has to step up for Jalen Hurts and the offense, as the Eagles don't want to have Barkley have 378 touches again like he did last year. They need to be able to pass the ball around and spread to guys other than Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Goedert.
Who will step up at receiver? Training camp will determine that.
