NFL.com: When 49ers are clicking, they can beat anybody

The San Francisco 49ers enter the playoffs as a Wild-Card underdog against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. While NFL.com experts predict the Eagles will advance to the Divisional Round, the 49ers-Eagles matchup emerged as the toughest game to call from Wild Card Weekend.

The 49ers have overachieved this season and were in the running for the No. 1 seed in the NFC before a Week 18 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Still, finishing 12-5 is impressive given the injuries the roster has faced, including key defensive stars like Fred Warner and Nick Bosa.

"The Niners have a tough opening-round draw (at Eagles) and are dealing with a few lingering injuries that cloud their outlook," wrote Ali Bhanpuri. "But when this club is clicking, it has shown it can beat anybody."

San Francisco's linebacker depth took a hit in Week 18. Tatum Bethune suffered a groin tear and is out for the season, while Dee Winters (ankle) and Luke Gifford (quad) are also nursing injuries.

On offense, there's hope for a boost if tackle Trent Williams (hamstring) and wide receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee) can return this week. Neither was available in the loss to Seattle.

Running back Christian McCaffrey has been the engine of the 49ers' offense, and quarterback Brock Purdy has been playing well down the stretch. Still, for many, it's tough to envision an injury-ravaged roster dominating against one of the NFC's best.

"These depleted Niners aren't well-rounded, but they're well-coached -- and it's reasonable to expect a positive regression from the offense after last week's humiliation," Gennaro Filice wrote.

NFL.com experts also expressed skepticism about the Eagles, making the matchup even more difficult to predict.

"Vic Fangio's defense has been solid, but the unit still feels incomplete following last offseason's attrition," Filice wrote. "Meanwhile, the offense has fallen off a cliff, becoming a constant source of frustration under first-year coordinator Kevin Patullo. So, who do you trust: the undermanned visitors or the underwhelming home team?"
