The National Football League Players’ Association is demanding better behavior from the league’s referees.

On Sunday, Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride appeared to be on the receiving end of some unkind (and perhaps profanity-laced) language from a referee.

“During Sunday’s game between the Cardinals and the Giants, CBS camera caught an interaction between line judge Jeff Seeman and Arizona tight end Trey McBride,” Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio shared on Sunday night.

“The moment got the attention of NFL Players Association executive director JC Tretter.”

The Cardinals lost the game, 36-24. Following the game, NFLPA executive director JC Tretter demanded better behavior from the league’s referees.

“This kind of behavior from an official towards a player is unacceptable. Players are consistently held accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standard,” the statement reads.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter is confirming that the league is looking into the incident during Week 4.

“The NFL said it is reviewing the situation in which an official appears to use profanity at Cardinals TE Trey McBride. The NFLPA Executive Director JC Tretter called for the NFL to hold the official accountable,” he reported on Sunday night.

McBride, one of the best tight ends in the league, immediately turned to the camera following the interaction with the referee. He appeared to be happy that the camera was there, which could indicate that the referee might end up regretting what he said to the Cardinals tight end.

It’ll be interesting to see if the NFL chooses to discipline the referee, given that players and coaches are often fined or suspended for their behavior on the field, when it crosses the line.

The ref’s behavior might have crossed that line on Sunday, too.
