The Los Angeles Rams, usually known for striking gold in the NFL Draft, zag when everybody else was zigging.
Instead of trading down from No. 13 or taking someone who could help them win during their current Super Bowl window, they shocked the NFL world by taking Ty Simpson.
That decision sparked backlash, criticism and mockery, and even San Francisco 49ers GM John Lynch seemed happy about it.
However, Alabama legend Nick Saban believes the Rams did just what they needed to do there.
"I think it's a perfect scenario for him, to be able to play behind Matthew Stafford for a few years," Saban told "SportsCenter" on Thursday Night.
While he's obviously not going to play for as long as Matthew Stafford is there and healthy, Saban believes that he needs to go to a good organization that could develop him for a couple of years to fulfill his true potential:
"I just think he needs to mature a little bit as a quarterback, which means get more reps, get more experience, and then I think he'll be a very, very good player," Saban said. "This is a perfect situation for him to get into, though, where he doesn't have to play, where he's going to be able to take some time to develop, and I think it's going to work out perfectly for him."
Of course, that makes perfect sense, but the Rams could've possibly traded down and gotten him later in the first round. They may have even been able to get him in the second round.
Stafford isn't getting any younger, but with a WR1, Puka Nacua, who was in rehab just a couple of weeks ago, and a WR2, Davante Adams, who's about to be 34 years old, taking an inexperienced quarterback who may not play for a couple of years was certainly an odd decision.
Only time will tell, and the Rams' draft track record is solid, so they should at least get the benefit of the doubt.
