One of the early storylines of the Philadelphia Eagles’ season was their reunion with Zach Ertz, who was signed to the practice squad after Week 2. However, Ertz has missed the last two games after exhausting his maximum number of practice squad elevations. Head coach Nick Sirianni addressed the situation without ruling out the possibility of the Eagles signing him to the active roster.

“Zach’s obviously still here,” Sirianni said. “He’s out of elevations at this particular time. I think Zach’s been having really good practices. There’s things that you can’t predict, but I love having Zach on this football team, and we’ll see as the season progresses. And when he’s been in with the ones, he’s had great reps, and when he’s been in with the scout team, he’s given our defense great looks, phenomenal looks.”

Ertz is now in his second stint with the Eagles after being originally drafted by the franchise in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, where he earned three Pro Bowl selections and played a crucial part in the Eagles’ Super Bowl LII victory.

Brought back to add another receiving weapon in the tight end room with the injury of Dallas Goedert, Ertz has had a limited impact on the field. Through three games, Ertz has recorded just three receptions and a catch rate below 40%, while being a negative as a blocker in the run game. Many fans are calling for Ertz to remain on the roster, with the legendary tight end now just 8 receptions away from passing Harold Carmichael’s franchise record of 589 catches. However, beyond Ertz being out of practice squad elevations, the tight end room may have become harder to get consistent snaps.

Eli Stowers, who the Eagles drafted in the second round of the 2026 NFL draft, has been sitting on the injury reserve list, but his practice window was opened last week, meaning he can make his Eagles debut this week against the Cowboys.

Stowers was a dynamic receiver threat in his last two seasons at Vanderbilt, recording 111 catches for 1,407 yards, and won the John Mackey Award and was voted a unanimous All-American in his final collegiate season. While he reportedly struggled during training camp, it will be interesting to see if the Eagles would want to see what they have in the young rookie in what may be an off-year.

Grant Calcaterra is also available to make his debut now off IR. Calcaterra served as the Eagles’ TE2 the previous two seasons.

Ertz will need to be signed to the active roster to play in the remainder of the season. However, time will tell whether the coaching staff believes he adds enough value to a position group that already has decent depth.
