Patrick Mahomes took plenty of hits last night from the Philadelphia Eagles. Did Nike throw him one as well?
Shortly after Philadelphia's 40-22 win over Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, Nike released a new ad commemorating the Eagles' victory and the journey they took to get there. The commercial started with footage of star running back Saquon Barkley's dropped pass in a Week 2 loss to the Atlanta Falcons and also included images of a dejected Nick Sirianni on the sideline and the field at Super Bowl LVII after the Chiefs beat Philly two years ago.
From there, it transitioned to highlights of the Eagles' run to glory this season. The whole time, the song "Bein' Green," or "It's Not Easy Bein' Green," from Sesame Street and The Muppet Show played in the background.
That song is sung by Muppets creator Jim Henson as Kermit the Frog. At first glance, the choice of music seems straightforward--the Eagles had some low moments and now are on top of the world--but some thought things went deeper.
Several commenters made note of using Kermit the Frog in the ad, considering Patrick Mahomes is known for his distinctive, Kermit-like voice.
"They got Mahomes narrating, that’s wild," one person said.
"Using Kermit for this was diabolical," another added.
"Why y’all got Mahomes singing on this? Y’all petty ," a third person said.
"Can’t believe they got Mahomes to sing," a fourth chimed in.
Was it intentional on Nike's part? We'll never know for sure.
Mahomes is an adidas athlete and its biggest football brand ambassador, but it still seems odd that Nike would want to take a jab at one of the most popular athletes in the country and arguably the face of the NFL.
It could all just be a coincidence. Perception is reality though, and more than a few people think there was a motive behind the song choice.
