No rule change proposal made on Eagles' QB sneak push play

The Philadelphia Eagles revolutionized the quarterback sneak play in 2022 by taking advantage of the rule that allowed blockers to push a runner forward. It looks like that play is here to stay for at least one more year.

Even though the league's competition committee is "split" on the play, according to competition chair Rick McKay on Tuesday, no team made a proposal to change the rule and there was not enough agreement on the committee to do the same, so it will live on for now. 

“The committee definitely split on the play and whether the play should be legal or not legal," said McKay. "The history being we took the language out and we allowed the push because of officiating. There was this concern by officials down the field in some of these goal-line [situations], people are trying to get that two yards in open field, it’s very hard to tell when a guy is coming in to block and when a guy is coming in to push. So we took it out."

He also added they did not envision teams using it as a strategy.

The lesson here should be that NFL teams are smart and they will find any loophole they can to exploit it as long as they are allowed. 

The Eagles were nearly unstoppable using the play in short-yardage situations this season, and new Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton has already said he plans on exploiting the rule as long as it is allowed.
