Sam Darnold may have avoided the worst-case scenario after suffering a hip injury very early in the Seattle Seahawks’ game against the New England Patriots on Wednesday at Lumen Field in Seattle, Wash.

Darnold exited the contest shortly after getting sacked on the first drive of the night. He reportedly suffered a right hip injury and did not return to action. Backup Drew Lock stepped in and helped guide the reigning Super Bowl champions to a 13-10 victory.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported following the game that Darnold was taken to the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for a CT scan on the quarterback’s hip. The initial result of the test did not provide the full extent of the injury but was “encouraging.”

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald informed the media that the team “got great news back” and that doctors don’t believe Darnold fractured his hip.

Darnold completed just a pass on two attempts for 13 passing yards before leaving the Patriots game. Lock took over the chores under center and went 16/22 for 122 passing yards and a touchdown with zero interceptions.

The former No. 3 pick Darnold may still need to miss time, depending on the severity of his injury. The Seahawks will have a long rest before getting back to action in Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 20 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
