Ohio State’s latest recruiting win means a lot more than your typical commitment for one big reason
Adam Cairns/Columbus Dispatch-USA TODAY NETWORK

The Ohio State Buckeyes have 21 commitments in their class of 2026 and the majority of the work is done there. There are a few finishing touches to put on the current class, but the majority of the work is indeed done for the Buckeyes. Going into Sunday night, the Buckeyes had a pair of players committed for the class of 2027. That changed with a Sunday night addition for the Buckeyes and it's a key one.

Jeremiah Smith’s younger brother commits to Ohio State on Sunday night

Ohio State has added its first 2027 defender by way of 2027 ATH Angelo Smith, who is a three-star player out of Chaminade-Madonna (FL). The younger brother of Jeremiah was offered as a defensive back this summer by the Buckeyes and they made him earn it. Smith camped in Columbus in 2024 as a wide receiver and he did not leave with an offer from the Buckeyes. Ohio State sees the 5-foot-10, 170-pound athlete as a potential difference maker with his competitive nature as a defensive back.

According to 247 Sports Composite, Smith is the No. 38 safety and No. 400 player in the 2027 class nationally. Ohio State beat out the Miami Hurricanes to land Angelo, which should sound familiar because the Buckeyes did the same to land Jeremiah over them. Angelo and Jeremiah aren’t likely to play at Ohio State at the same time because the current Buckeye is projected to be a top-5 pick in 2027. This commitment does mean the Buckeyes are slated to have at least six straight seasons with a Smith brother on the roster if all goes to plan.

Smith joins five-star WR Jamier Brown and four-star QB Brady Edmunds as the three commitments so far for the Buckeyes in the class of 2027. Ohio State is notably after Jett Harrison, the brother of former Ohio State star Marvin Harrison Jr. as well. Expect things to heat up a little for the 2027 class as we head into the winter and early part of next year.
