The Philadelphia Eagles for the most part looked great in their first preseason win over the Cincinnati Bengals 34-27 on Thursday.
It was all about the offense and how efficient they looked with Tanner McKee at quarterback. Multiple receivers, including Darius Cooper, Johnny Wilson, and Ainias Smith made big play after big play in the game whether on offense or special teams..
More of the concerns were about the poor play of Kelee Ringo and Adoree' Jackson who are both fighting for the CB2 job. There is now a cloud of unknown at the position and whether more guys are going to get a shot at starting.
One other concern from the game has not been brought up by anyone that most fans and media are ignoring. It may not be a problem now, but it could become a potential issue when the game is on the line in the regular season.
The stat line is going to show that Elliott didn't play that bad in the preseason win over the Bengals. He made both of his field goals with his longest being from 44 yards out and hit all three of his extra points. All seems good in the world, right?
There was a moment on the Eagles' first drive of the third quarter that Elliott was called on the field to hit a 55-yard field goal. He ended missing to the right. Way, way right.
Elliott counted his blessing that an offside penalty was called on the Bengals which became a fourth and two. The Eagles went for it and McKee hit Cooper for a six-yard completion and a first down. Elliott still capped off the drive with a field goal. This time from 23 yards out.
Missing fields is going to happen. It's part of the game, but Elliott has a continuous problem not being reliable from 50+ yards out.
Last year, he made just one of seven field goals from 50+ yards out and that one made was from exactly 50 yards. In the postseason, he only missed one field goal, but that was from 50+ yards out. The only 50+ yard field goal he made was, of course, 50 yards.
This wasn't always a problem for Elliott. In fact, prior to 2024, Elliott had made 26 of 37 from that distance, which was 70.3%. Last year, he made 14.3% of those kicks.
Philly can't keep ignoring the problem that is on their hands with Elliott not being clutch from long distance. This is going to bite them in the butt when it comes down to him needing to hit a 50+ yarder to win a game for the team.
