Kansas City Chiefs starting left tackle Josh Simmons has been out all season with a back injury. Head coach Andy Reid divulged that Simmons is dealing with a bulging disc that is hindering the strength from his legs. He did not practice Wednesday.

Simmons was taken in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He started eight games as a rookie and was penalized seven times. He missed time due to personal reasons and finished the season in Injured Reserve due to a wrist injury.

“He is making progress,” Reid said of Simmons. “He’s had a bulging disc in his (lower) back. … He’s getting strong, which is important. Backs can be tricky. The positive is he’s here, and he’s getting better. I think we’re heading in the right direction here.”

Undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson has filled in for Simmons at left tackle with mixed results. Benson’s 60.7 PFF grade ranks 51st of 70 tackles. His pass block grade of 46.2 ranks 66th, and his run block grade of 66.4 ranks 29th. Benson has played every snap on offense this season and has been flagged for two penalties. He has allowed nine pressures and five hits on the quarterback.

The team has yet to place Simmons on Injured Reserve, which means he is likely considered week-to-week. He’ll need to practice before he can be considered to play against the Las Vegas Raiders (3-0) Sunday.
