The New England Patriots released Stefon Diggs earlier in the offseason.
They structured his three-year contract so that they could move on from him without carrying major dead cap hits, and they pulled the plug on the experiment just one year into his contract.
However, that doesn't mean their partnership should end. In fact, Patriots EVP Eliot Wolf hasn't shut the door on bringing him back, according to the Boston Herald's Doug Kyed.
That's why Diggs' camp should be pushing to stay in Foxborough. Looking at the bigger picture, the Patriots make the most sense for him right now.
Despite his well-documented issues off the field, the Patriots and head coach Mike Vrabel said all the right things about Diggs. His production fell in the playoffs, but he still had pretty decent numbers in the regular season.
All in all, Diggs had 85 receptions on 102 targets for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns. Those aren't bad numbers for a veteran coming off a major injury, and he clearly has chemistry with Drake Maye.
More than that, getting Diggs back on a cheap one-year deal might be more realistic than trading for A.J. Brown. The Philadelphia Eagles refuse to lower their asking price, and the Patriots may end up empty-handed if they don't look for alternatives.
The Patriots have already signed Romeo Doubs, and Diggs can be an outstanding complementary piece in a secondary role at this point in his career. Also, with the lack of options, he'll probably be looking at teams like the Cleveland Browns or New York Jets if he doesn't run it back in Foxborough.
