Ottawa Redblacks, Toronto Argonauts Make Rare CFL Trade

The Ottawa Redblacks were one of the best teams in the CFL last season, and the Toronto Argonauts were, of course, the best team overall.

After winning the Grey Cup, the Argonauts want to improve for 2025 and have brought back most of their 2024 squad who helped lead them to supremacy.

The Redblacks and the Argonauts have reportedly swapped players, with each team getting a guy who has spent little or no time in the league up north. Ottawa sent defensive lineman Andrew Chatfield to Toronto in exchange for defensive back Craig James.

Chatfield played one game last season in the nation's capital but did not record a single stat. However, he did have solid playing time in college. He made 67 total tackles, 13 sacks, and two interceptions over 49 career games split between the University of Florida and Oregon State.

James initially signed with Toronto last month ahead of this trade. This came after the defensive back played parts of five seasons in the NFL, split between the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, and Minnesota Vikings.

James made 18 total tackles and two passes defended through 23 NFL games. Right now, it seems Ottawa got the better of the deal, but it remains to be seen. These teams will not play their first game against each other until June 29 in Ottawa.
