Outside source pitches interesting trade idea for Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders are not without their own questions to answer as the regular season comes along.

Geno Smith is the locked-in starter for this season, but the battle for who will become his backup rages on. However, Aidan O’Connell has struggled to gain traction this preseason, while Cam Miller has shown flashes more than anything. It has left the Raiders with some valid concerns about their situation under center, with a Smith injury having the potential to derail the first year of the Pete Carroll era.

However, one team’s monumental quarterback decision could open the door for the Raiders to make one of their own.

A source familiar with Pete Carroll believes the coach could push to bring a talented quarterback into the fold.

On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts made the decision to name Daniel Jones as their Week One starting quarterback over Anthony Richardson.

This prompted Seattle Seahawks reporter Corbin Smith to post on X about the possibility of Carroll and the Raiders pursuing Richardson in a trade.

“I could absolutely see the Raiders trying to trade for Anthony Richardson to work with him behind Geno Smith,” Smith wrote.

“Pete Carroll has been a fan for a long time. And Pete has a pretty good track record with his staff of turning the careers around for QBs.”

Smith is accurate about Carroll‘s affinity for Richardson, as the head coach has admitted that he would have been in play for the Seahawks had he fallen to them in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Instead, Richardson was drafted fourth overall by the Colts, but his career has not gone as planned. Despite tantalizing physical gifts, Richardson’s NFL career has been plagued by injuries and poor decision making. A year on the bench is certainly the best course of action, but it is fair to wonder if quarterback is the position where he can maximize his athleticism.

If the Colts decide to cut bait with Richardson, the Raiders could ultimately find him as an intriguing buy-low opportunity.
