Overview of Miami’s Two New Position Coaches
The Miami Dolphins have found two new position coaches. With new staff leaders, new position coaches always follow.
Former New York Giants running backs coach Ladell Betts has taken the same job with the Dolphins, and former Houston Texans offensive line coach Zach Yenser joins the staff as well.
Betts is best known for his tenure as a running back through the early 2000s in Washington, where he eclipsed over 1100 rush yards in 2006. He had 1 year in the NFL, 2025 with the Giants.
Betts has coaching roots in Florida, and bringing him home to help develop our power backs and run game is intriguing. He did good work in a limited amount of time with Cam Skattebo in 2025. His best work was with the Hawkeyes. Returning to his alma mater, Betts helped develop its power-running game.
Betts helped develop Kaleb Johnson, the 2025 NFL Draft pick. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected him to be a 1-2 punch with Jaylen Warren in the power game. Prior to that, he was a head coach for Pine Crest High School in Florida.
After Butch Barry was poached by the Chargers, they reportedly brought in an old friend of new offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik. Yenser spent the 2024 season coaching the offensive line on Slowik’s staff.
Though this may not seem like a great hire, Yenser has 17 years of experience coaching the offense. He has spent 4 years as an assistant coach at the NFL level and is familiar with the scheme. He also worked with the 49ers, further establishing his knowledge of the under-center play action scheme Miami will likely carry over.
When it comes to position coaches, there shouldn’t be any overreactions.
Both coaches are young but experienced, with Betts having a strong track record with power runners and the run game.
Miami needs more success on short runs to convert first downs.
A new offensive line coach is a breath of fresh air, as it seemed Butch Barry was starting to lose his touch with Miami’s group.
