Packers, Aaron Rodgers likely stuck with each other for a while

The Green Bay Packers might be stuck with quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the foreseeable future.

It's a strange thing to say, being that Rodgers is the reigning back-to-back NFL MVP and just signed a major extension worth roughly $150 million.

However, the Packers are 4-7 and will have a tough path to the playoffs this season. It feels more likely that Rodgers will miss the postseason for only the fourth time in his illustrious career.

The Packers also have a sore point on the roster with quarterback Jordan Love. After being drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, he's been largely an afterthought in Green Bay.

The trouble in Green Bay is massive. The team is watching in real time the inevitable Rodgers regression, and there is no easy path to getting Love any playing time this year or beyond.

The Packers can't trade Rodgers due to his contract. Per Over the Cap, he would count for $99 million in dead cap in a pre-June 1 trade or release. He'd count around $30 million to $31 million in a post-June 1 trade or release. Neither seems likely.

No team in the NFL is going to want to hassle with this much money for an aging quarterback, even if it's Rodgers. The future Hall of Famer has also become a bit of an enigma in the media.

He's been accused of throwing his fellow players under the bus by former teammate Charles Woodson. He also admitted to misleading the public on his COVID-19 vaccination status during the 2021 season.

With Rodgers not playing at his typical level and the Packers falling short in other areas, Green Bay looks cooked for 2022. The veteran quarterback isn't playing so poorly to where the Pack would have to bench him, but there is a clear drop-off from where he was last season.

Rodgers and the Packers are in sinking quicksand. Green Bay is stuck with his contract, and Rodgers is stuck on a team with more questions than answers — all while Love is waiting in the winds.

Life isn't great at Lambeau Field, and it doesn't look like it's going to get any easier.
