Packers Add Veteran Guard to Bolster Woeful O-line

After a disastrous Week 1 performance by their offensive line, the Green Bay Packers made a move to bolster the unit. On Thursday, they signed former Cincinnati Bengals guard Cordell Volson to the practice squad.

A 2022 fourth-round pick out of North Dakota State, Volson has started 48 games over three seasons, all with the Bengals. The 28-year-old hasn’t played since 2024, after missing the entire 2025 campaign due to season-ending shoulder surgery.

Released by the Bengals ahead of the 2026 season, Volson inked a one-year, $2.5 million deal (worth up to $4.215 million) with the Tennessee Titans, but was cut at the end of training camp.

In 2024, Volson started 15 games and earned a 59.1 offensive grade, 48.8 pass-blocking grade, and a 65.6 run-blocking grade, per Pro Football Focus. Meanwhile, he allowed 43 pressures, 10 QB hits, and six sacks.

At best, Volson’s addition is underwhelming. However, he may be the best option at guard for the Packers.

Don’t Be Surprised If Cordell Volson Gets a Chance to Play  

Volson has played every snap of his NFL career at left guard, so he’s likely to play there, if and when the Packers activate him. Considering the Packers’ depth and recent performance at the position, the odds of that happening soon are fairly high.

In Week 1, Donovan Jennings started at left guard in place of Aaron Banks, who has been sidelined with knee tendinitis since the beginning of training camp. Jennings allowed two pressures against the Vikings, earning a Pro Football Focus offensive grade of 39.3, the lowest among Packers o-linemen.

Meanwhile, rookie Jager Burton remains an option after impressing in training camp. Leading up to the season opener, he was the frontrunner to start in place of Banks, but obviously plans changed.

If Banks remains out of action, Jennings continues to struggle, and the Packers aren’t ready to trust Burton, Volson may get his shot.
