Packers admit Aaron Rodgers was inspiration for ayahuasca TD celebration

Randall Cobb said they were just “drinking some tea,” but Sammy Watkins later let the cat out of the bag.

During a touchdown celebration in the second quarter of the Green Bay Packers 27-10 win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday, receiver Allen Lazard, who caught the five-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers, poured the metaphorical psychedelic tea for a number of players including Cobb, Jon Runyan, and Aaron Jones before each fell to the turf.

Rodgers denied having any part in the planning of the celebration while Watkins, who had three receptions for 93 yards, confirmed via ESPN’s Rob Demovsky following the game that the celebration was indeed a tip of the cap to Rodgers, who claimed earlier this year on the “Aubrey Marcus Podcast” that his ayahuasca use during a 2019 trip to Peru led to the best seasons of his career in 2020 and 2021.

The 38-year-old QB set career-best marks for completion percentage (70.7) and touchdown passes (48) in 2020 while throwing five or fewer interceptions for just the fourth time in 14 seasons as Green Bay’s starting QB.

He followed that up with a 37-touchdown, four-interception season last year. Rodgers led the Packers to 13-3 records and won the NFL MVP both years.

“Ayahuasca [helped] me see how to unconditionally love myself,” Rodgers said in August. “It’s only in that unconditional self-love that then I’m able to truly be able to unconditionally love others. And what better way to work on my mental health than to have an experience like that?”

Rodgers, who threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday, improved his career record to 24-5 against the Bears.
