Former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs has been claimed off waivers by the Green Bay Packers . The Cowboys are left watching from the outside, without two of their stars in Diggs and defensive end Micah Parsons. They are now on a playoff team.
Diggs and Parsons are teammates once again. Parsons was traded to the Packers in August, and now Diggs joins him.
Derrick Ansley helped Diggs become a CB at Alabama and is now the Packers’ defensive pass game coordinator. He played with star safety Xavier McKinney and running back Josh Jacobs at Alabama. Connections matter in this league.
Nate Hobbs suffered a potentially season-ending knee injury. Kamal Hadden’s ankle injury ended his season, and he’s already on injured reserve. Diggs has played only eight games this season, missing time due to a concussion and knee injury, and has not deflected any passes or intercepted any.
Diggs has no INTs or pass breakups in eight games this season. Opposing quarterbacks have a perfect 158.3 passer rating on 20 targets against him. He has one tackle for loss.
In a single-elimination tournament like the NFL playoffs, one interception can change the entire trajectory of a franchise. Getting an All-Pro talent for virtually no cost is a front-office masterstroke.
Diggs is still better than what the Packers have at CB right now. Even regressed, he’s an upgrade this defense badly needs.
Green Bay makes a low-risk, high-reward gamble on the former Cowboys cornerback. It is worth it considering what the Packers have left at the secondary.
