The Packers got a wake up call in Cleveland on Sunday, but it might have come at the ideal time for Green Bay.
Fortunately, though, for Matt LaFleur’s team, Sunday’s loss likely won’t hinder any tiebreaker scenarios in the NFC North race or the race for the No. 1 seed in the NFC, later on this season. So, if there were ever a game to stumble, it might have been against Joe Flacco’s Browns on the banks of Lake Erie.
Over at Pro Football Focus, analyst Dalton Wasserman has the Packers holding steady at No. 4 in the outlet’s latest power rankings despite coughing up a victory in the final :30 to the Browns.
“The first speed bump for the Green Bay Packers didn’t come in the form of the fearsome Detroit Lions,” Wasserman writes for PFF. “Nor the Washington Commanders — who made the NFC Championship Game a year ago — but instead the 0-2 Cleveland Browns. The Packers were shocked by a Browns defense that has played hard all season, holding the Packers offense to just 3.6 yards per play, as a late field goal dropped the Packers to 2-1.”
As far as losses go, the Packers’ to the Browns likely will produce some teach tape for LaFleur and the staff, but it doesn’t seem to change Green Bay’s Super Bowl aspirations.
Even after Sunday’s game, Pro Football Focus still gives the Packers a 7% chance of winning the Super Bowl, with an overwhelming 76% chance to make the NFL Playoffs.
Far more importantly to the Packers’ trajectory, will be Sunday night’s showdown in Dallas against the Cowboys, offering a chance for Green Bay to get back on the right track and pick up a third NFC victory.
