The Green Bay Packers have already signed Christian Watson to a long-term extension, and he might not be the only receiver to get a new deal this season.
Even as his name is circling in trade rumors ahead of the deadline next month, Romeo Doubs could be on the cusp of signing a lucrative long-term contract, cementing his place in the Packers’ offense and Jordan Love’s supporting cast.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, not only does a Doubs trade seem unlikely in the immediate future, but he could figure to be a big part of the Packers’ long-term future, as well.
“The Packers have shown no interest in trading him,” Fowler writes for ESPN. “And my sense is they have more interest in potentially extending him. The sides have had cursory talks, keeping in contact about the future. Doubs staying in Green Bay beyond 2025 is at least a possibility.”
If Green Bay is intent on keeping Doubs around well into the future, it likely isn’t going to be cheap.
Doubs could become the most coveted free agent wide receiver next spring if he hits the open market, but the Packers can prevent that by paying him a top-of-market contract to keep him in a receiving corps that includes Watson, emerging first-round rookie Matthew Golden and others.
One month from the trade deadline, Doubs’ future with the Packers is bound to come into clearer focus.
