The Packers have few needs across the roster, but shoring up one of the biggest weaknesses on coordinator Jeff Hafley’s defense could be a top priority for general manager Brian Gutekunst.
After the Tennessee Titans traded Roger McCreary to the Los Angeles Rams, it didn’t just bolster a defense that Jordan Love and Green Bay’s offense may need to get through on the NFC road to the Super Bowl, but took a potential top trade target off the board for Gutekunst and the Packers.
While losing out on McCreary may sting, especially if Gutekunst and the Packers had the cornerback high on their target board, there are other options.
Amid Tucker Kraft’s continued breakout season, the Packers could look to move off tight end Luke Musgrave in a player-for-player swap that would drop a veteran cornerback into Hafley’s secondary, perhaps both solidifying a need and elevating the entire defense for the stretch run.
Over at ESPN, Insider Jeremy Fowler suggests the New Orleans Saints could trade ascending cornerback Alontae Tayler ahead of the deadline.
“The Saints don’t want to trade Taylor,” Fowler writes. “But would consider it if they receive a strong offer. He is on the radar of a few teams. Taylor is a 2026 free agent who figures to earn a big payday, and it’s worth noting that the Saints have a young core of defensive backs they like in Kool-Aid McKinstry, Quincy Riley and Jonas Sanker.”
Given that the Saints are looking to add young players and draft capital, Green Bay may be able to pry Taylor away in exchange for Musgrave and a draft pick, with the young tight end as a potential top target for whichever young quarterback New Orleans prioritizes in the 2026 NFL Draft.
With the Packers, Taylor would have the chance to chase a Super Bowl ring and would arrive as one of the premier defenders on the back-end.
