Packers expert pushes back on the idea that Steelers' potential QB Aaron Rodgers and former WR are a good match in Pittsburgh
USA TODAY Sports

With the Pittsburgh Steelers sending George Pickens packing, the question now turns to who will be his replacement?

There are a plethora of free agents and trade candidates, some of whom have already been linked to Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers.

One of those names would be current Green Bay Packers WR Romeo Doubs. On the surface it makes sense. But when you take a deeper dive, Doubs and Rodgers might not be the best fit in Pittsburgh...

Would the Packers trade Romeo Doubs?

While Romeo Doubs is a reliable receiver, he also has the lowest ceiling among the Packers' top options—including Watson, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks. The situation gets more intriguing after Green Bay took Matthew Golden in the first and Savion Williams in the third round of the draft. Doubs is a solid piece of the offense, but at the same time it's hard to keep him around paying a veteran wide receiver contract with so many other options.

The big question is compensation. With George Pickens being traded for a third-rounder, it's hard to imagine Doubs generating much more than, let's say, a fifth. And if that's the case, the Packers could just let him play out his contract and get a compensatory pick later—unless the team is willing to anticipate the draft capital by a year.

Doubs has been linked because of the obvious need in the Steelers' WR room. He has a skillset they tend to covet from their perimeter players in the number two role and he can work in Arthur Smith's offense.

But the main reason people have attached Doubs to the Steelers isn't because of the overflow in Green Bay or need in Pittsburgh, it's Aaron Rodgers.

That may not be so accurate...

Rodgers and Doubs relationship

Romeo Doubs was a fourth-round pick in 2022, so he played only a season with Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback. It was a fairly productive year for a Day 3 rookie, with 42 catches for 425 yards and three touchdowns. While their connection on the field was decent, they didn't have a close relationship off the field.

"I didn't have a chance to hang out with him. Not one time," Doubs said back in 2023 when asked about the topic by CBS Sports. "I mean, as far as being around 12, I'd say possibly it's always been football. In the building, on the practice field." During an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers explained why that was the case.

"Listen, I'm 100 percent attendant on every team party. I don't know that every person can say that on the squad. That's a chance to hang out with me in those venues. I'm damn near 100 percent every single O-line dinner. We do some dinners on the road. So, I think I spend a lot of time with my teammates and I love that time," Rodgers explained. "Now, there's obviously ones you're closer with than others. The things that I'm thinking about and doing and spending my time doing are probably a little different than the 21-, 22-year-old (. . .). I love Romes, I enjoy playing with Romes, I enjoy our conversations. I enjoyed seeing his personality come out. But there's two types of leaders: There are leaders that want to be liked first and foremost and respected second, and there are leaders that want to be respected first and foremost and liked second."

We'll see if the Steelers decide to make a move, but it's hard to envision a WR room where their second-best option is Robert Woods or Calvin Austin III. Expect Aaron Rodgers to have input on who is brought in as well.
