Packers give up on intriguing WR prospect after the draft, and injuries played a major role in the sudden decision

Of all the reported undrafted free agent signings the Green Bay Packers would make, only one didn't become official last week, wide receiver Julian Fleming. Now, there is finally some clarity about what happened. According to Marc Malkoskie, the sports editor at The News-Item, Fleming failed his physical due to concerns about hip and back issues.

Fleming played four seasons at Ohio State before transferring to Penn State for his final college season. He went undrafted, and quickly after agreed to sign a free agent deal with the Packers. He traveled to Green Bay on Thursday, ahead of the team's rookie minicamp, but the team informed him he wouldn't be signed after all.

Malkoskie reports that the "Packers were notably concerned with the 24-year-old's recent hip (recently re-torn) and back (bulging disks) injuries."

Now, Fleming is looking for new opportunities in the NFL. He's been in contact with the Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, and Washington Commanders to possibly attend their rookie minicamps—most teams will hold them this week.

Outcome at wide receiver

The Packers drafted two wide receivers in Matthew Golden and Savion Williams. Julian Fleming had been the only undrafted free agent signed at the position. The team had Jack Studer (Wisconsin-La Crosse), Ali Jennings (Virginia Tech), and Jaden Smith (Nevada) as tryout players in the rookie minicamp, but neither has been signed to the 90-man roster.

At the bottom of the roster, Green Bay has two players who spent most of last season on the practice squad. Cornelius Johnson, last year's seventh-round pick by the Los Angeles Chargers, and Julian Hicks, whom the Packers signed as a UDFA a year ago. The team waived Tulu Griffin earlier this week, an indication that they don't see problems with the number of receivers on the roster.

The wide receiver room has Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Matthew Golden, Dontayvion Wicks, Savion Williams, Mecole Hardman, Malik Heath, Bo Melton, Julian Hicks, Cornelius Johnson, and Christian Watson, who's expected to miss the start of the regular season with a knee injury.
