The Green Bay Packers are now without All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander, but that doesn't mean the entirety of their secondary is broken down.
With Nate Hobbs, Carrington Valentine, and Keisean Nixon taking the starting spots, the Packers now have more opportunities for younger players to prove themselves as backup corners.
On Thursday, June 19, general manager Brian Gutekunst expressed his excitement for the Packers' new era in the secondary.
"Between Kalen King, Kamal Hadden and Micah Robinson, I think there's going to be really good competition for the backend of the roster [at cornerback]," Gutekunst said in a recent media, according to Packers Wire's Zach Kruse on X. "I'm excited to give those guys that opportunity."
King and Hadden spent the majority of 2024-25 on the practice squad whereas Robinson is entering his rookie season after being drafted No. 237 overall by Green Bay. Hadden, who was originally drafted by the Chiefs, signed a one-year contract with the Packers on Jan 13.
With training camp and preseason ahead, King, Hadden, and Robinson will by vying for backup spots behind Hobbs, Valentine, and Nixon. Since Hobbs, Valentine, and Nixon can all play multiple cornerback spots, Gutekunst isn't worried about Green Bay's starters.
"We feel really good about those three guys. And the versatility they bring, all three guys can play inside and outside, so we're excited about that," Gutekunst said. "There's not many teams in this league that have three guys that they feel really good about, we do, so I like our depth there."
Depth in the cornerback position will lack experience, though. It will be the main challenge for King, Hadden, and Robinson to prove they can play beyond the practice squad and behind players with five to six years of experience in the secondary.
Both King and Hadden have already caught positive attention from the team. Passing game coordinator Derrick Ansley complimented King in offseason workouts and Nixon pointed out Hadden's standout performances in OTAs, according to Packers Wire.
If the two can continue growing and turning heads in their favor, the Packers secondary will be in good shape. Depending on Robinson's development and if King and Hadden can continue to prove themselves, Green Bay may need to look at recent signees Isaiah Dunn and Gregory Junior or undrafted free agent Tyron Herring. Worst case scenario for the Packers is needing free agent veteran for experience and security.
