The stakes and the ceiling for the Packers’ upcoming season both were raised significantly after Green Bay’s blockbuster trade to acquire Micah Parsons.
“They’re Super Bowl contenders now,” an AFC Scout told me, immediately after the trade was announced.
However, even with 52.5 career sacks, Parsons is just one piece of a legitimate Super Bowl puzzle that general manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers have put together over the past half decaude that might be ascending to a championship level in the season ahead.
Jordan Love is an ascending talent at quarterback, and the Packers didn’t just upgrade his supporting cast by drafting Matthew Golden and Savion Williams, but the offensive line in front of the third-year starter may be a hidden strength.
According to PackersWire’s Mark Oldacres, Green Bay’s commitment to building a dominant offensive line, especially in pass protection, could power a Packers Super Bowl run.
“Green Bay’s organizational philosophy to continually invest in the offensive line,” Oldacres writes of the Packers. “As well as their knack for finding mid-to-late round gems and polishing them up, has consistently paid off over the years, going back well before Gutekunst’s tenure.
“It is rare to find a bad team with a good offensive line. A strong barrier in front of the quarterback is essential for success in the NFL, and the Packers have made it a priority. Since 2014, Green Bay has ranked no lower than 10th in PFFs team pass blocking rankings in each and every season.”
Parsons might grab the headlines, and make enough disruptive plays to make life easier on Love and the offense, but dominance along the line of scrimmage could be the quickest way for Green Bay to not just follow the Eagles’ Super Bowl blueprint but succeed them as champions.
