Through the first two games of the NFL season, the Packers looked like the most dominant team in the NFC, and arguably the leader to make a run at the Super Bowl. Then, the past two games changed the narrative.
After dropping a last-second heartbreaking loss to the Cleveland Browns before flying down to Dallas only to tie the Cowboys on national television, not everyone is convinced that the Packers are among the favorites to represent the NFC in Santa Clara, Calif. come February.
Over at Sports Ilustrated, Jakob Sklinkman believes the Packers’ identity crisis raises some red flags.
“It’s hard not to overreact to how the Packers performed during their two games before this week’s bye, but there were some positives in the loss and the tie,” Slinkman writes. “It is not time to overreact in Green Bay. The defense showed what it can be in the first three weeks of the season, and the offense has looked incredible at times despite key players out due to injuries. With the bye coming up this week, the Packers have time to get healthy and come out even stronger.”
The Packers failing to close out games has been a major worry. But, just how far the Detroit Lions, whom Slinkman lists as the NFC’s top contender to reach the Super Bowl, have leapfrogged Green Bay won’t truly be known until these two teams meet at Ford Field, on Thanksgiving.
