The Green Bay Packers don't seem inclined to sign a cornerback after releasing former All-Pro player Jaire Alexander , but it doesn't mean they can't look for alternatives. During mandatory minicamp practice on Tuesday, Green Bay moved wide receiver Bo Melton to cornerback.
It might not be a full-time transition, as Melton still used the offensive jersey, but the Packers are willing to give him a chance. After some individual drills, Melton even practiced at CB with the ones.
"I think it's just something we're going to look at," general manager Brian Gutekunst said to local media, "and see if that's a possibility."

Gutekunst didn't sound overly concerned about the cornerback situation, despite the outside perception.
"I feel really good. The three guys got combined about 95 starts under their belt, felt really good about that," Gutekunst said, in reference to Keisean Nixon, Nate Hobbs, and Carrington Valentine. "We got some young guys that we're really interested to see compete for those final roster spots. I'm excited about where that group is. The three guys have proven their ability in this league. I like their make-up, their toughness, their ability to play, their versatility."
This offseason, the Packers lost Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, Corey Ballentine, and Robert Rochell. The two most significant additions were free agent signing Nate Hobbs and seventh-round pick Micah Robinson. A few weeks ago, the team also signed Gregory Junior.
When asked about the possibility of keeping Jaire despite the injury risk, Gutekunst was clear about his process.
"We've done that the past few years, and it hasn't really worked out for us," he explained.
A seventh-round pick in 2022 by the Seattle Seahawks, Bo Melton has been with the Packers since the final month of his rookie season. He's appeared in 22 games as a wide receiver and special teamer for Green Bay, with 24 receptions for 309 yards and a touchdown.
This year, it will be much more difficult for Melton to make the 53-man roster as a wide receiver due to the level of competition. Green Bay drafted Matthew Golden and Savion Williams in the first three rounds, and also signed veteran Mecole Hardman in free agency. The flexibility to move to cornerback gives Melton an extra shot, even though it's a risky bet for the Packers.
