The Packers exorcised major demons on Sunday, taking the first of two versus the Bears. Matt LaFleur’s approach to the rivalry has been criticized by fans, with many calling him soft.
LaFleur chose to let the players do the talking and decide the game. “This game is about the players. I’m not the one out there playing.” The coaches and players became the most cohesive unit they have been all year.
This game is a great reminder to take September football with a grain of salt. As painful as the first month of the season has been, the page is turning. Sunday is a major step in the right direction.
Letting the players decide the outcome did the heavy lifting. The defense capitalized on five turnovers. Jordan Love’s performance was masterful, finishing the game with 367 yards and two touchdowns.
The fans and the team have life again, and the buzz surrounding it will have a much different tone this week.
There are many positives and signs of improvement this game showed. Most notably, the offensive passing attack. When Love has time in the pocket, the explosive plays naturally follow.
Christian Watson and Matthew Golden looked the part of a dynamic wide receiving duo. The defense is down their two best players in Edgerrin Cooper and Micah Parsons, but everyone still stepped up. Leading behind several Bears miscues and Xavier McKinney getting two interceptions.
However, the team suffers another loss as Javon Hargrave tore his Achilles. This is the fourth player in five weeks that has suffered a season ending injury, yet another hurdle to overcome.
The running game still has plenty of questions. MarShawn Lloyd led the running backs with two touchdowns. Lloyd definitely had more confidence. The work will continue on breaking some tackles and not going down on first contact.
Despite a solid start to the year, Trey Smack struggled to get any sort of consistency on his field goals. Thankfully, his misses didn’t cause much harm since the team held onto their lead. I am hopeful that Smack had an off day and he will be able to bounce back fine, but this should be a point of emphasis this week.
LaFleur kept his foot on the gas pedal, allowing Love to air the ball out and trusting in his ability to will this team to victory. Good things happen for this offense when Love can throw the ball on first down.
During the broadcast, Greg Olsen emphasized that a run on first down is basically a wasted down currently. Without Josh Jacobs, the offense must rely on Love’s passing first and hope the run game will thrive as a result.
Next up is the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night in primetime. The Cowboys have a depleting secondary that Love should be able to take advantage of. While the Cowboys will be getting a boost from Joey Porter Jr., there is more overall confidence in the offensive weapons for the Packers.
This win versus the Bears is something to build upon. It is time to harbor the momentum, stack some wins, and show that the Packers are still capable of setting the tone and rewriting their season.
