Packers’ Matt LaFleur Exposes Jordan Love’s Biggest Problem

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love enters the 2026 season with elevated expectations. After establishing himself as a capable starter, the former first-round pick is widely viewed as ready to climb from the second tier of NFL quarterbacks into the conversation among the league’s elite.

On that note, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur recently pointed to a specific area of improvement that could help Love take that leap.

“Knowing that there’s going to be times that you’re going to get moved off the spot, but when you can, can you maintain that balance?” LaFleur said. “One thing you see from the majority of quarterbacks in the league, when they’re balanced in the pocket, they’re going to be more consistent and more accurate over time.”

Love already shows the ability to create dynamic plays on the move, yet the coaching staff wants greater consistency when pressure forces him to reset his feet inside the pocket. Maintaining body control in those moments would allow Love to deliver more accurate throws under duress and reduce the drop-off that currently appears in his performance.

Supporting data underscores the point. When Love releases the ball in under 2.5 seconds, his completion percentage ranks among the league’s best.

Once he holds the ball longer and must adjust his base, that ranking falls sharply. The difference illustrates how quickly the pocket can turn from a strength into a challenge. Improving footwork and balance in those extended situations would give Love a more reliable foundation on every dropback.

The Packers have built a supporting cast designed to help him succeed. Receivers Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and Matthew Golden provide speed and separation, while tight end Tucker Kraft returns healthy.

LaFleur’s offense can scheme around Love’s strengths while still demanding growth in the weaker areas. The tools and scheme are in place; the remaining progress rests with the quarterback himself.

Public rankings of quarterbacks have reflected this mixed profile. Most lists place a clear top five, then scatter a larger group of names across the next ten spots. Love often lands in that second cluster because evaluators see both high-end flashes and stretches of average play.

Nights when he stays balanced and rhythmically distributes the ball look like those of a top-tier passer. Other nights, when the pocket collapses and his base becomes uneven, the production dips enough to keep him outside the elite conversation.

This season offers Love a clear opportunity to resolve the debate. If he can add the layer of consistency LaFleur has identified—staying balanced when moved off the spot—he stands a strong chance of elevating his ranking and helping the Packers contend at a higher level.

The coaching staff has diagnosed the issue and equipped him with the personnel to succeed. Now the onus is on Love to turn that insight into more reliable performance under pressure.
