Packers head coach Matt LaFleur could have taken the conservative approach and played for the tie, late in Sunday’s eventual Green Bay win over the Arizona Cardinals, but instead sent a strong message in his belief in quarterback Jordan Love.
In a big moment, LaFleur put his faith in Love and the Packers’ offense.
When LaFleur pulled the kicking team off the field, to go for it, rather than attempt a game-winning field goal, NFL Media’s Eric Edholm argues that it sent a resounding message to the Packers’ locker room and to Love.
“The Packers initially lined up to kick the game-tying field goal on that fourth down,” Edholm points out. “But Matt LaFleur called timeout to set up a play for Love. That’s trust you like to see. It was a tough environment for the offense, with Jacobs limited, but Love found a way in the end.”
Love finished Sunday’s game 19-of-29 passing for jsut 179 yards and a touchdown, but delivered in the clutch, during the game’s biggest moments.
On the Packers’ final possession, Love completed 2-of-3 passing attempts for 23 yards, including a 15-yard completion to tight end Tucker Kraft that set up the game-winner.
If Love was trying to send a message to his quarterback, not to mention win the game, it was received loud and clear.
“It’s big-time,” Love told reporters, of LaFleur’s call there. “For Matt to decide to go for that right there in that situation, to have the confidence in the offense to go make a play … it’s going to suck if we don’t get it. If you do, it pays off and you get the win.”
