The Packers once again find themselves collapsing due to their errors. From the start of Sunday’s game, puzzling decisions were made by the coaching staff.
Their best offensive lineman in Kevin Zeitler was a healthy scratch. Leaving people wondering what the point is of signing him. In a division where wins come at a premium, the Packers start with a decision that beats themselves.
The Packers had to rely on John Williams, the third string center to lead them through the line. Despite losing Sean Rhyan and Jacob Monk to injury, Williams put up an honorable performance in a hostile environment.
The talk of the game became the officiating. Many NFL fans with no dog in the fight weighed in on the inconsistency of the calls. However, the Packers have been every bit as inconsistent as the officiating, if not more so.
When the team is beating themselves, it is hard to blame the officials. My concern with the officiating is the integrity of the game with the calls, and this is across the league.
Unless the NFL suffers in the ratings department, this will not change. It is on the players to adjust accordingly. This doesn’t make it right, but the blueprint has been set.
The Packers struggle to find any sort of cohesion in the offense. Jordan Love is carrying the team on his back and it is not sustainable. Between the drops and offensive line play, he is constantly playing behind the sticks.
To add insult to injury, the team has to play again in just three days. There is not a lot of time to truly reflect on this game. All eyes lead to the Carolina Panthers in Lambeau Field on Thursday Night Football.
The next challenge comes in another NFC opponent. There is one team that had a worse Sunday than the Packers, and that is the Panthers.
Both teams faced division rivals but lost in very different fashion. Baker Mayfield came back to lead the Buccaneers to a 43-13 victory. The kicker is Mayfield threw for only sixty-four yards; the game being won through the rushing attack.
The unfortunate truth for the Packers is that if Trey Smack makes two field goals, they win. Another year where this team has a top quarterback, and they don’t take special teams seriously. Drafting a kicker hasn’t worked in the team’s favor, yet this is what the personnel department chooses to come back to.
There are several questions the coaching staff must answer to before Thursday. The good news is that there is plenty of football left to be played. The bad news is that the team continues to make the same mistakes.
The opportunity is there for the Packers to turn things around, but only one team can capitalize on it. If Green Bay doesn’t, another Thursday night crash out will follow. The Packers must stop creating their own problems and show that they can learn from their mistakes.
