Packers Must Improve This Key Area to Close Gap on Lions, Eagles

The Green Bay Packers’ bid to bring a Lombardi Trophy home came to an end last January in Philadelphia, falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion Eagles in the NFC Divisional round.

Last season’s playoff exit represented a step back from the prior season, when quarterback Jordan Love guided the Packers to the NFC Divisional Round, taking the San Francisco 49ers to the brink, in the process.

So, after being swept by the NFC North and the eventual top seed in the NFC, Detroit Lions, and falling to the Eagles in the playoffs, a critical area of need has emerged that the Packers must address if this team is going to close the gap on the top contenders in the conference.

Packers’ Offensive Line Holds Key to Offense in 2025

The Packers doubled up on offensive playmakers during the NFL Draft, adding wide receivers Matthew Golden and Savion Williams, but it s fair to wonder if Green Bay did enough this offseason to improve the offensive line in front of Love and explosive running back Josh Jacobs.

Signing guard Aaron Banks could provide some stability, but as PackersWire’s Mark Oldacres points out, the Packers’ run blocking has to be better if Green Bay is going to take the next step.

“This is the aspect the Packers are furthest away from being Super Bowl caliber,” Oldacres writes for PackersWire. “Ranking 23rd in 2023 and 22nd in 2024.

“They have made an effort to beef up their offensive line this offseason, bringing in one of the better run-blocking guards in the league in Aaron Banks and drafting behemoth Anthony Belton in the second round. There are reasons for hope they can improve and get to the level required in 2025 and beyond, but right now, run blocking looms as Green Bay’s weakest offensive facet.”

Jacobs is an explosive run factory, but given the fact that the Eagles’ offensive line and Lions’ offensive line have become the backbone of Philadelphia and Detroit’s sustained championship-caliber success on offense, improving opening up running lanes is going to be pivotal for the Packers this fall.
