Packers Predicted to Trade Romeo Doubs as Part of Deal for $72M Star WR

The Green Bay Packers lost a war of attrition against the Philadelphia Eagles over Super Wild Card Weekend as injuries decimated the roster, specifically at the wide receiver position.

Green Bay remained competitive in Philly on Sunday, Jan. 12, even despite all the health issues the WR room battled. That said, Benjamin Solak of ESPN predicted following the Packers' first-round playoff loss that the team will pursue a consolidation trade at the position during the offseason.

"While I love the versatility of the Packers' wide receiver room (when it is healthy), they could use a clear WR1 who can take over games with consistent eight-plus-target outings," Solak wrote. "Expect them to be in the Tee Higgins hunt, but if getting him gets too expensive for them, they could package someone like Romeo Doubs -- who will be in the final year of his rookie deal in 2025 -- to grab a frustrated star from another team. Garrett Wilson? DK Metcalf? I'd bet on the latter."

Metcalf, who recently turned 27 years old, has been reliable from health and production perspectives since entering the NFL six years ago. He's a two-time Pro Bowler who has never missed more than two games in any of those seasons and has averaged more than 1,050 receiving yards and exactly 8 receiving touchdowns per campaign.

The Seattle Seahawks are already over the 2025 salary cap (-$16.15 million) as of Monday and could transition away from quarterback Geno Smith -- who is on the roster bubble heading into the offseason -- due to his age and price tag.

Metcalf is also on the cusp of the final season of his current $72 million deal and will undoubtedly be seeking an extension come March. That's not excellent news for any team interested in trading for him, such as potentially the Packers, because he's going to cost a significant amount over a multiyear contract.

However, whichever team inks Metcalf to a new deal in the coming months (or, less likely, in March of 2026) is going to lock in a legitimate No. 1 receiver through the bulk of his prime.

That kind of deal could make sense in Green Bay with a young cast of pass catchers still on the roster -- even if the Packers have to move one of them in a deal with Seattle -- and Jordan Love under center for the foreseeable future.
