Packers prove once again they are willing to acquire talent in every possible way as they continue to shape the roster

A big complaint among Green Bay Packers fans during the Ted Thompson era was the lack of activity outside of the draft. The previous general manager's unwillingness to sign external free agents and execute trades was a real problem in the final stretch of his tenure. But there has been no reason to worry about this with Brian Gutekunst.

Since he took over as the general manager in 2018, the Packers have been amongst the teams with the most draft picks in volume, but Gutekunst has also been active to add talent in every possible avenue, especially on the margins. Micah Parsons' trade was just another step in that direction.

Over the Cap mentioned last week that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the team with most homegrown talent in the league, at 82.5%.

From the 53 players on the Packers roster, 64.15% are homegrown—drafted or first signed as undrafted free agents by Green Bay. Nineteen players have started their NFL careers elsewhere, and that includes players acquired via trade, like Micah Parsons last week, waiver claims, unrestricted free agents, street free agents, and players signed from other teams' practice squads.

"Every opportunity that's out there to help your football team, we’ve always taken a look at. Try to see how it affects us right now, how it affects us in the future, and make the best decision we can,” Gutekunst said last week. “Sometimes we’ve been right, sometimes we’ve been wrong. Sometimes we’ve taken risks that really worked out for us, sometimes they didn’t. Sometimes we didn’t take risks and we look back and wish we would have.”

In 2025, four external additions are on the current roster. Unrestricted free agents Aaron Banks and Nate Hobbs, street free agent Nick Niemann, and two acquired via trade, Darian Kinnard and Parsons.
