Packers re-sign tight end Robert Tonyan

Aaron Rodgers won't have Davante Adams to throw to next season, but he is getting back one of his familiar targets.

Robert Tonyan has agreed to a one-year deal to return to the Packers, per Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The deal is for two years but voids after one season, so it's effectively a one-year deal with the money spread over two for cap purposes.

Tonyan is one of the few Packers receiving options who are locked in to return next season. Adams is gone after a trade to the Raiders, and Marquez Valdez-Scantling is a free agent who many believe could sign elsewhere. Allen Lazard is also a free agent, but the Packers applied the second-round tender to him, meaning that any team who signs Lazard would have to give Green Bay its second round pick. Randall Cobb is still on the roster but could be cut to save money.

There are still plenty of available pass catchers the Packers could acquire, though. Odell Beckham Jr. would be a good fit once healthy. Julio Jones could have a resurgence with Rodgers as his quarterback. Jarvis Landry would almost certainly benefit by upgrading to Rodgers from Baker Mayfield.

Either way, Rodgers will have Tonyan, who was one of his top options in 2020 before a somewhat disappointing 2021 season. Tonyan caught 52 passes for 586 yards in 2020, finding the end zone 11 times. He played in just eight games last year, though, catching 18 balls for 204 yards while logging two scores.
