Packers reportedly make big move toward keeping Jaire Alexander

The Green Bay Packers appear to be serious about keeping star cornerback Jaire Alexander on the team in 2025.

At the very least, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic is reporting that the Packers have made the first move of this offseason stalemate and have put the ball squarely in their former first-round pick's court.

"According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the Packers have proposed a restructured contract to Alexander, which tangibly demonstrates their interest in retaining the two-time All-Pro cornerback during an offseason in which they have been open to trading him," Schneidman wrote on Tuesday."

Alexander is a Pro Bowl-caliber player when healthy, but he's played in only 14 games over the past two seasons combined. To make matters worse for the Packers, he's due $16.1M this season in base salary and $18.1M next season.

For a top cornerback who plays every game, that's a reasonable price. For a player who is in no way guaranteed to be healthy, though, that's a tough ask. Alexander is also no longer a spring chicken in NFL terms — which is why the Packers are proposing a restructure.

Per Schneidman, Alexander has not yet agreed to the restructure, but he does want to stay in Green Bay. He's also planning on attending minicamp on June 10, even if this situation hasn't resolved itself just yet.

It does sound like both sides want to come together, but the offseason is long and anything can still happen.

Still, this is a pretty big update from the Packers' side of things.
