As the Green Bay Packers gear up for a tough Week 15 road matchup against rookie quarterback Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos, the team could be without one of its most important offensive weapons.
During this week’s practice sessions, head coach Matt LaFleur addressed reporters and provided updates on several players listed on the injury report. His comments regarding running back Josh Jacobs raised eyebrows, especially with one of the Packers’ most difficult remaining games looming.
Jacobs, who suited up in last week’s victory over the Chicago Bears, has been managing a knee issue that has limited him in practice. He has not participated in team drills in recent days, leading to inevitable questions about his readiness for Sunday.
“He’s been battling through it,” LaFleur said on Thursday. “More than likely, he will not be out there today either, so we’ll see how he’s feeling tomorrow and kind of go from there.”
When pressed further on whether he was worried about Jacobs’ availability for the game itself, the coach didn’t sugarcoat the situation.
“I think anytime a guy doesn’t practice, there’s always concern,” LaFleur said. “So, we’ll see. He’s been battling through it. He is doing everything in his power to get ready to go.”
Through 12 games this season, the veteran back has rushed for 817 yards and an impressive 12 touchdowns on 206 attempts. In his second year with Green Bay after arriving from Las Vegas, Jacobs has become a centerpiece of the offense and a reliable safety valve for quarterback Jordan Love.
The 2023 campaign with the Raiders saw Jacobs miss the final four games because of a quad injury, and earlier this season he sat out the Packers’ Week 12 win over Minnesota due to the current knee problem. He returned for the following two contests, including the recent triumph over Chicago, but afterward acknowledged lingering stiffness in the knee.
Although an MRI revealed no significant structural damage, LaFleur’s cautious tone suggests legitimate doubt about Jacobs suiting up against Denver. Should he be ruled out, Emmanuel Wilson—who filled in admirably during Jacobs’ previous absence—would once again be expected to carry the load in the backfield.
With the playoff picture tightening, the Green Bay Packers can ill afford to be short-handed against a Broncos team riding the momentum of its emerging young quarterback. All eyes will be on Friday’s practice report and Saturday’s final injury designations to see if Jacobs can gut it out one more time.
