The Packers have high hopes for rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden, but as Green Bay’s first round pick goes through some expected growing pains and with injuries mounting across the offense, it’s another wide receiver who is emerging.
Without Jayden Reed, Christian Watson still working his way back, and Tucker Kraft dealing with nagging injuries, Dontayvion Wicks is emerging for Love and the Packers’ offense.
Through the first three weeks of the season, Wicks has caught eight passes for 95 yards, and while he is still in search of his first touchdown, the Dallas Cowboys’ porous secondary offers a strong chance to change that on Sunday night.
Over at Pro Football Focus, Lauren Gray points out that Wicks enters Sunday’s action as the outlet’s No. 7 ranked wide receiver in the league.
“Wicks recorded two catches for 21 yards against the Browns in Week 3,” Gray points out for PFF. “Most of his yardage stemmed from a third-down catch late in the third quarter — a 16-yard pickup between two defenders. The play set up first-and-goal for the Packers inside Cleveland’s five-yard line.
“Wicks is up to eight catches for 95 yards on the season with seven first downs. He ranks seventh in PFF receiving grade from the intermediate level of the field (91.3), where he’s secured all five of his targets for 68 yards.”
As the Packers search for consistency at wide receiver, and Love for weapons to emerge in a critical bounce-back game, Wicks could take on an expanded role as early as Week 4, given his strong play in limited action through the first three weeks.
