Packers’ Rookie Could be Primed to Steal the Show During Training Camp

The Green Bay Packers boast one of the most explosive and prolific running backs in the sport, but it could be an unheralded rookie who pushes for a role during training camp this summer.

Josh Jacobs’ resurgence in 2024 was critical to the Packers’ offense, and the former rushing champion could build on his stellar 1,329-yard and career-high 15 touchdown campaign in 2025 if Green Bay’s offensive line makes strides and thanks to a second year of familiarity in head coach Matt LaFleur’s system and playing alongside quarterback Jordan Love.

Jacobs, though, likely won’t be alone in the Packers’ backfield.

How Amar Jackson Can Carve Out a Role in Packers’ Offense

Position battles are a key component of training camp, and the fight for jobs and snaps behind Jacobs figures to be an intense one for the Packers over the next two months.

According to USATODAY Sports’ Brennen Rupp, undrafted rookie Amar Jackson could be a top candidate to land a fourth running back job, if LaFleur and the Packers keep four at the position.

“Johnson is alert in pass protection,” Rupp writes for PackersWire. “And works hard to protect the integrity of the pocket. He finished his career with 50 receptions for 449 yards and one touchdown. Johnson’s real shot to separate himself in the running back room is his ability as a kick returner. During his time in Brookings, he averaged 21.0 yards per kick return. He was also a standout kick returner during his prep school days at Chaminade College Prep.

“Johnson is no stranger to playing a crowded running back room. During his time in Brookings, he played behind Pierre Strong Jr and Isaiah Davis. He’ll face an uphill climb to crack Green Bay’s running back rotation. However, he’s the type of player who will make the most of his opportunities. Given his well-rounded skill set, he may bust down the door and earn a spot on the final 53.”

During his final season at South Dakota State, Johnson rushed for 1,222 yards with 14 touchdowns, before signing with the Packers as an undrafted free agent.

It could be an uphill climb just to make the final 53-man roster, but Johnson’s skill set could help him separate himself over the next few weeks.

The combination of pass-blocking prowess and the ability to contribute on special teams is critical for down-roster players, which could serve Johnson well.
