Packers rookie reveals surprising decision away from the field

The pressure on NFL kickers is unlike anything else in the sport. Every mistake is highly magnified, and when you are trying to establish yourself as a rookie, outside noise can become completely overwhelming.

Green Bay Packers rookie kicker Trey Smack is already getting out ahead of the negativity. After missing a few kicks during recent training camp practices, the young specialist made a veteran-savvy move by removing the noise entirely.

According to Kyle Malzhan of WFRV Local 5 on X, Smack revealed in the locker room that he recently deleted social media apps from his phone “for the most part.”

Smack, who the Packers selected in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft out of Florida, is currently entrenched in a brutal kicking competition in Green Bay. The stakes are massive, and keeping a clear, focused head is paramount for his survival in the league. At Florida, Smack was heavily reliable, burying 53 of 64 field goals (82.8%) over his career while converting 100 of his 101 extra points. He also showcased exceptional leg power, establishing a Gators school record with 10 converted field goals from 50 yards or more.

However, kicking in The Swamp is vastly different from facing the swirling, unpredictable winds of Ray Nitschke Field in Green Bay during the summer, let alone Lambeau Field in December. The rookie has reportedly hit some bumps during his first professional training camp, struggling with his consistency during team periods.

By disconnecting from social media, Smack is making a calculated decision to protect his mental space. As the regular season approaches, maintaining that internal focus will be critical if the 23-year-old wants to lock down the starting job and keep his career moving forward.
