Packers sign key defensive tackle to $57 million contract

The Green Bay Packers will be under a lot of pressure to return to the playoffs this fall. Green Bay’s biggest strength should be their defense, even with Micah Parsons expected to miss a few games to start the year because of his torn ACL. The Packers just retained one of their core defensive players just before the start of training camp later this month.

The Packers signed defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt to a three-year contract extension worth $57 million on Monday, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Wyatt’s new contract includes a $20 million signing bonus. It is a massive payday for the former first-round pick.

The Packers drafted Wyatt with the 28th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Wyatt has been a solid player for the Packers ever since, though he has not yet flashed elite potential.

Still, Green Bay exercised the fifth-year option on Wyatt’s rookie contract. That will pay him $12.93 million for the 2026 season. But now Wyatt should stay in Green Bay through the 2029 season thanks to his three-year extension.

Wyatt has 101 total tackles, 16 sacks, one forced fumble, and three fumble recoveries during his four years in Green Bay.

The Packers may look different on defense in 2026 with Jonathan Gannon taking over as defensive coordinator. Wyatt projected as a starter before his extension, but now that role seems locked in stone. The Packers also have veteran Javon Hargrave and Karl Brooks as starters on the defensive interior.

Wyatt is not the only Packers defender to sign an extension before training camp. Green Bay also extended Isaiah McDuffie on July 12th, reinforcing their depth at off-ball linebacker.

Green Bay is seemingly locking up all the defensive players who will fit well in Gannon’s new defense. But they may want to leave some room to sign tight end Tucker Kraft as well.
