Packers sign USFL WR Osirus Mitchell

The Green Bay Packers have added another receiver to their offense for training camp.

While the team had been connected to established receivers like Julio Jones, Odell Beckham Jr., Will Fuller and T.Y. Hilton, it ultimately went another direction by adding former USFL receiver Osirus Mitchell. The team made the move to sign Mitchell on Tuesday. Green Bay was impressed by his workout on Monday so much so that it extended a contract offer to the former Mississippi State star.

Mitchell, who stands at 6-5 and weighs 210 pounds, is a big receiver. He caught 23 passes for 333 yards and three touchdowns for the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL this spring.

Mitchell will look to make an impact for the Packers in the red zone during training camp. The Stallions won the USFL championship and Mitchell was a key contributor on offense. His ability to make contested catches is what could give him a shot to make this Packers roster. The Packers only have two receivers standing at 6-4 or above on their roster (Allen Lazard, Christian Watson).

Mitchell joins a position group in training camp that includes the likes of veterans Allen Lazard, Sammy Watkins and Randall Cobb. It also includes talented rookies in Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Samori Toure. It will be tough for Mitchell to make the 53-man roster. However, his experience on a winning team in the USFL and his size can help him gain an inside track at making the team or at the very least, the practice squad.
