Packers still seem very high on Jordan Love

The Green Bay Packers used a first-round draft pick on Jordan Love in 2020, but he’s only played in one game for them so far. Aaron Rodgers has won NFL MVP in consecutive years since Love was picked, and as long as Rodgers remains with the team, there is not a spot available for Love to play. But that does not mean the Packers are interested in parting with Love so easily.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst spoke with the media on Wednesday. He was asked about potentially fielding trade calls for Love and said he was “very doubtful” that he would take many of those calls.

There could be a couple of explanations for that.

First, the Packers still are unsure whether Rodgers will return to the team next season. They need to have a backup plan in place, and that plan is likely to turn the ball over to Love. Secondly, Gutekunst is unlikely to announce to the world that they are looking to deal one of their players. Lastly, Gutekunst may have just been speaking about the timing, that trade calls don’t really take place at this point in the year.

The biggest issue is as long as the Rodgers situation is unresolved, Love isn’t going anywhere. Green Bay liked Love enough to make him a first-round pick in 2020. They probably still want to see what he can do for them at some point.
