Packers To Sign OL Mekhi Becton

This deal comes after Becton worked out with the Packers earlier this morning. Matt Schneidman of The Athletic notes this is a practice squad arrangement. Becton represents the latest arrival for a Green Bay offensive line which added guard Laken Tomlinson in the wake of Week 3’s loss.

Becton also received interest from the Steelers, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports. Pittsburgh’s situation up front did not generate the same potential path to playing time (or at least a roster spot in short order) as Green Bay’s, though. As a result, the decision to join the Packers comes as little surprise.

After a Jets tenure which included considerable missed time, Becton thrived as a guard starter with the Eagles in 2024. A strong showing in Philadelphia resulted in a two-year free agent pact with the Chargers. Things did not play out as hoped for the former first-rounder, however. Becton played 15 games (starting all but one) with Los Angeles, but he struggled to replicate his Eagles success. As expected, he was released in March.

Becton played through a labrum injury in 2025 without knowing it, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. He adds surgery took place during the spring. Now healthy, the 27-year-old will look to get his career back on track with Green Bay. Improved play along the O-line would be critical for a Packers team which has struggled on that front en route to a 1-2 start to the season.

Guard is the spot at which Becton has enjoyed the most success, although he was drafted as a tackle. The right tackle spot in particular is one to watch for Green Bay in the wake of Zach Bako-Bewele’s season-ending knee injury. Anthony Belton is a candidate to handle RT duties on a full-time basis moving forward. That could allow for Becton to move into the right guard spot depending on when he is deemed ready for game action.
