The Green Bay Packers have matched their commitment to building an elite offense around Jordan Love, with significant investments on the defense over the past two seasons.
Not only did the Packers sign safety Xavier McKinney last offseason, dropping him into coordinator Jeff Hafley’s secondary, but made what could become one of the most impactful blockbuster trades of the past decade across the NFL by acquiring All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons.
Green Bay committed upwards of $186 million with $120 million guaranteed to Parsons, who joins homegrown talent such as ascending linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, and fellow edge Rashan Gary. But, it might be another player the Packers have drafted and developed who might be next to cash in on a mega-deal.
Over at Bleacher Report, NFL analyst Kristopher Knox suggests that the Packers prioritize inking linebacker Quay Walker to a long-term contract extension.
“Walker’s deal could come first,” Knox writes for B/R. “Since the Packers declined his fifth-year option and exercised Wyatt’s. The 25-year-old linebacker was sidelined following ankle surgery but came off the PUP list early in training camp.
“A couple of strong early-season performances could be enough to prove Walker is at 100 percent and earn him an extension.”
Walker is entering the final year of his rookie contract, after posting 341 total tackles through his first three seasons with 6.5 sacks and one interception. About to be turned loose by coordinator Jeff Hafley, and with Parsons’ arrival off the edge, Walker could play his way into a significant pay raise by season’s end. That is, if the Packers allow negotiations to drag on that far.More must-reads:
