Packers Wide Receiver Depth a Big Question Entering Minicamp

The Green Bay Packers parted ways with two of their top four receivers from a year ago this offseason. The wide receiver room may not have as much proven depth, but the remaining players will have more defined roles. The top three will be Christian Watson and Matthew Golden on the boundary and Jayden Reed in the slot. But there will be a big battle for the fourth and fifth receiver spots on the depth chart. Here is a look at the Packers wide receiver depth and why it’s a big question entering minicamp. We will look at the top candidates for the top backup spots.

Packers Wide Receiver Depth a Question, Candidate Number One: Savion Williams

Second-year man Savion Williams enters mandatory minicamp as the favorite for the fourth receiver spot. The TCU alum got off to a slow start as a rookie. He played only 91 offensive snaps in the 12 games he appeared in last season. Most of the time, head coach Matt LaFleur dialed up gadget plays for Williams like end arounds, jet sweeps and bubble screens. He caught 10 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown while running the ball 11 times for 37 yards. Williams did see action on special teams, primarily as a kick returner.

The Packers are hoping Williams will take a step forward in his second season. He needs to prove he can be a regular contributor on offense and not just a gadget player. Williams has the size and speed to be successful but needs to put it all together.

Candidate Number Two: Bo Melton

The Packers have officially moved Bo Melton back to wide receiver after experimenting with him at cornerback last season. Despite the official move, Melton did not play one snap on defense during the regular season. He did step in and play receiver when injuries hit the position, and he played extensively on special teams.

Melton caught four passes last season for 108 yards and one touchdown last season. His most productive campaign came in 2023 when he caught 16 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown.

Melton gives the Packers a reliable and experienced depth candidate at wide receiver. The coaching staff loves his work ethic and intelligence. He has also shown the ability to make big plays when called upon.

Packers Wide Receiver Depth a Question, Candidate Number Three: Skyy Moore

The Packers signed Skyy Moore this offseason as a free agent. The Packers are hoping that Moore will be able to improve their return game, something he’s done well for both the Chiefs and 49ers in his four NFL seasons.

Moore would be considered a long shot to be the team’s fourth receiver. Most observers consider him more of a fifth or sixth receiver on the depth chart. He does have NFL receiving experience but should see more of his action on special teams.

Number Four: The Other Candidates

The Packers have several other wideouts at minicamp although these players are considered long shots to make the initial 53-man roster.

Jakobie Keeney-James played for the Packers in the season finale last year against the Vikings. He caught two passes for 15 yards despite the Packers playing a third-string quarterback in the game. He returns to try to earn a roster spot.

Isaiah Neyor spent time on the Packers practice squad last season but did not appear in a regular season game. He was activated to the roster for the Packers playoff game last year but did not catch a pass. He was quickly signed to a futures contract and will compete for a roster spot on practice squad berth again in 2026.

The Packers signed Brendon Rice to a free agent contract this offseason. He previously spent time with the Chargers, Patriots, Seahawks and Raiders. He is the son of Hall of Famer Jerry Rice.

Will Sheppard has the size the Packers like at 6’3”. He spent most of last season on the practice squad but did not appear in a game.

Michael Sturdivant joined the Packers as an undrafted free agent after not being selected in this year’s draft. He has some intriguing skills but has not managed to replicate the production he showed in his first season of college ball.
